Join us on Monday\, April 6th at 6:30PM for a hands-on workshop where we dive deep into the DNA of textiles. \nIn this session\, we’re moving beyond the “touch test” and getting technical. You’ll learn how to distinguish between natural\, synthetic\, and blended fibers using professional observation and the famous Burn Test. \nWhat We’ll Cover:\n\nFiber Anatomy: Understanding the characteristics of protein (wool/silk)\, cellulose (cotton/linen)\, and synthetic (polyester/nylon) fibers.\nThe Burn Test: Learn to identify fibers by their flame reaction\, odor\, and the residue they leave behind.\nHand & Drape Analysis: Tips for narrowing down fiber content through tactile observation.\nPractical Care: How identification changes the way you wash\, iron\, and sew your fabrics.\n\nThe Burn Test Guide\nDuring the class\, we will reference a reaction chart similar to this: \n\n\n\nFiber Type\nReaction to Flame\nOdor\nResidue\n\n\nCotton\nScorches\, glows\nBurning paper\nFine grey ash\n\n\nWool\nSizzles\, curls\nBurning hair\nIrregular black bead (crushable)\n\n\nSilk\nBurns slowly\nBurning hair\nCrisp\, shiny black bead\n\n\nPolyester\nMelts and drips\nSweet/Chemical\nHard\, uncrushable black bead\n\n\n\n\nWhat to Bring:\n\nYour “Mystery” Stash: Bring 3–5 small swatches (at least 2″x2″) of fabrics from your own collection that you’d like to identify.\nNotebook & Pen: For recording your findings.\nCuriosity: (And maybe a hair tie—safety first around the flames!)\n\nNote: We’ll be meeting at Gabriella’s shop.  All safety equipment\, including tweezers\, tea lights\, and water stations\, will be provided.

DESCRIPTION:In 1926\, Vogue published a drawing of a simple\, long-sleeved black sheath by Coco Chanel\, famously dubbing it “Chanel’s Ford”—implying it was simple and accessible enough for every woman\, regardless of social class. \nOne hundred years later\, the Little Black Dress remains the ultimate canvas for self-expression. \nJoin us on Monday\, March 2nd at 6:30PM (Koelbel Library\, Room A) for a collaborative design intensive where we honor the LBD’s centennial by planning our own custom versions. This isn’t just a sewing circle; it’s a collective brainstorming lab where we’ll dissect a century of fashion history to build a dress that fits your modern life. \nWhat to Expect:\n\nThe LBD Timeline: A visual journey through the last 100 years—from Chanel’s 1920s rebellion and Audrey Hepburn’s 1960s elegance to the “revenge dresses” and grunge silhouettes of the 90s.\nCollective Design Lab: We’ll brainstorm silhouettes\, necklines\, and finishes as a group. Bring your sketches\, Pinterest boards\, or just your ideas! DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our monthly technical event: Couture Hem Techniques \nIn this 2 1/2 hour sewing lecture\, we will explore three refined hem finishes used in high-end garment construction. Each hem serves a different purpose – from delicate transparency to invisible structure – and each requires precision\, patience\, and understanding of Fabric Behavior. \nBy the end of the session\, you will have the knowledge and confidence to execute a rolled and turned hem\, a hand worked blind hem stitch\, and a structured hem with horsehair braid. \n\nRolled and turned hem – This hem is ideal for lightweight fabrics\, such as silk chiffon\, organza\, Georgette\, or any delicate fabric requiring a fine finish. The beauty of this hem is in the delicacy and it’s crisp clean edge.\nBlind hem stitch – The blind hem is a subtle nearly invisible finish commonly used on skirts\, trousers\, and dresses in lined or unlined garments. The couture version is entirely hand sewn for maximum control and minimal visibility from the right side.\nHem with horse hair braid – Used for gowns\, cocktail dresses\, flared skirts\, and anything needing body and movement\, horsehair braid supports the hem preventing collapsing\, and create a beautiful\, controlled edge.\n\nPlease bring the following supplies with you: Tape measure\, Scissors/nippers\, Thread\, and Hand Sewing Needles. \nA kit will be provided; members\, please bring $20.00 for the kit fee. \nLocation: Koelbel Library\, Meeting Room A\nTime: 6:30PM – 9:00PM \nRegister at Meetup HERE \nRegister at Eventbrite HERE \n

DESCRIPTION:Join us on Monday\, September 8th for an evening of charity sewing. \nWe will be sewing Gift “Ditty” Bags for seamen at sea over Christmas. \n  \nSign up by clicking this link \n  \nThis coming Monday we start our new season/year now that the summer is winding down. We will be jumping right in with our charity sew. Slightly earlier than in past years\, we want to be certain that our sewn items arrive at their intended destination with plenty of time for packing and distribution. \nWhat goes into a ditty bag? \nDrawstring ditty bags are used as gift bags in Port Newark. In addition to 2 knit or crocheted pieces\, we include several travel-size toiletries\, such as shampoo\, conditioner\, and body wash; a generous handful of wrapped candy\, gum\, and/or microwaveable popcorn; playing cards and puzzles; and a personalized Christmas card. \nHow do the gifts get delivered? \nIn Port Newark\, our SCI chaplains deliver ditty bags to vessels calling on the Port of New York and New Jersey from the Monday before Thanksgiving to Epiphany on January 6th. Stationed out of Houston\, TX\, and Paducah\, KY\, our SCI chaplains work directly with boat companies to make sure that every mariner working on Christmas receives a knit. \n  \nLocation: Sheridan Public Library\, 3425 W.
